Description

Position Title: Public Information Officer

Term of Employment: Part-Time (19.75 hours/week); no benefits

Reports To: Superintendent

Pay Information: Commensurate with experience

 

General Statement of Job

The Public Information Officer organizes online and in-person community engagement programs and events, supports district and school marketing efforts, supports press relations, and will serve as the primary creator of digital content. Work collaboratively with district members and other key stakeholders promoting the district’s vision, including internal communications, media relations, social media, SCS’s external and internal websites, marketing, strategic communications and inclusive outreach.

Essential Job Functions

Social Media Management:

  • Develop, implement, and manage the district’s social media strategy to promote positive engagement and inform the public on school activities, initiatives, and achievements.
  • Create and schedule engaging content across platforms including Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn, and others as needed.
  • Monitor and respond to community inquiries, comments, and messages in a professional and timely manner.
  • Analyze social media metrics to evaluate the effectiveness of campaigns and adjust strategies as necessary.

Content Creation & Design:

  • Create compelling visual and written content including graphics, videos, newsletters, blog posts, and press releases.
  • Capture and edit photos and videos at district events, school board meetings, and other relevant activities.
  • Collaborate with staff across the district to gather content and ensure district communications reflect the district’s goals and priorities.

Crisis Communications:

  • Assist in the development of communications during emergencies or critical situations to ensure timely, accurate, and consistent messaging to the community.
  • Support the district in addressing sensitive or high-visibility issues with professionalism and discretion.

Community Engagement:

  • Foster positive relationships with parents, students, staff, and local media outlets.
  • Coordinate and support district-wide events, town hall meetings, and other community engagement initiatives.
  • Serve as a spokesperson when appropriate and assist with media relations efforts.

Internal Communications:

  • Assist in distributing internal communications to staff and teachers to keep them informed about district-wide initiatives, events, and policies.
  • Work closely with school principals and department heads to gather and share information relevant to their areas.

Administrative & Miscellaneous Duties:

  • Assist with the development of district publications, such as newsletters, reports, and brochures.
  • Stay current on trends and best practices in digital communication, especially within the education sector.
  • Perform other duties as assigned to support the district’s communication goals.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Ability to communicate effectively; possess excellent oral and written communication skills (grammar, spelling, etc). 
  • Ability to work independently and efficiently, including the ability to research and gather information from varied sources. 
  • Proven experience managing social media platforms (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, LinkedIn, etc.), including content creation and engagement.
  • Working knowledge and proficient level of experience with Microsoft Office programs such as Word, Excel and PowerPoint. 
  • Strong editing skills. 
  • Ability to perform at a high level, as a team player, and with great flexibility, in a team environment. 
  • Ability to relate well to diverse groups of people. 
  • Strong organizational and problem-solving skills. 
  • Ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment. 
  • Ability to remain calm and professional in an environment that requires both proactive initiative and also rapid response to circumstances.
  • Demonstrated ability to handle sensitive or confidential information with discretion.
  • Passion for public education and community engagement.
  • Ability to work flexible hours with occasional evenings and weekends required for special events.

Minimum Training and Experience

  • Valid North Carolina driver’s license required. 
  • Minimum of three years experience in communications, media, public relations and/or marketing preferred.
  • Bachelor’s degree preferred.

Minimum Qualifications or Standards Required to Perform Essential Job Functions

  • This work requires the occasional exertion of up to 10 pounds of force
  • Work regularly requires sitting, speaking, or hearing, using hands to type and complete repetitive motions 
  • Work occasionally requires standing, walking, stooping, kneeling, crouching, or crawling with hands and arms, pushing, or pulling and lifting 
  • Work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data, operating machines and observing general surroundings and activities 
  • Work is generally in a moderately noisy location (e.g. business office, light traffic)
