Position Title: Custodian

Term of Employment: Full-Time; 12 months

Pay Information: Salary Grade 58

 

General Statement of Job

Performs difficult semi-skilled work leading the cleanliness, sanitation, security, safety and maintenance of building, grounds and equipment, scheduling and overseeing work of custodial personnel, expenditures, building repairs, facility projects, building use and building systems, and related work as apparent or assigned. Work is performed under the general direction of the Principal. Continuous supervision is exercised over Custodians. 

Essential Job Functions

  • Supervises and coordinates the cleaning of the school facilities.  
  • Plans and directs the custodial work at the school. 
  • Demonstrates work procedures as needed.  
  • Keeps buildings and grounds in a clean and sanitary condition.  
  • Helps to maintain the school’s heating and cooling systems by tending, cleaning and making minor repairs and adjustments.
  • Cleans windows, walls, woodwork and bathrooms.  
  • Replenishes tissue, towels and soap.  
  • Vacuums, sweeps, strips, scrubs, waxes, polishes and mops floors.  
  • Replaces light bulbs and fluorescent tubes.  
  • Dusts and arranges furniture and moves equipment and supplies.  
  • Empties wastebaskets and other containers and picks up paper or other trash from school grounds.  
  • Reports to Supervisor any damages or needed repairs.  
  • Secures buildings.  
  • Provides troubleshooting for building operation systems (HVAC, Plumbing, electrical, auditorium sound.  
  • Maintains outside grounds and athletic fields (mowing athletic fields, empty outside trash cans and general appearance).  
  • Coordinates summer maintenance schedules (stripping and waxing classroom and hallway floors, deep cleaning building).  
  • Acts as the First Responder to safety and security issues, hazards, adverse weather, alarms, fire, water breaks and mechanical issues.  
  • Performs routine inspections of school cleanliness.  
  • Performs safety inspections of fire extinguisher and sprinkler systems.  
  • Performs routine drills for fire, tornado, lock-down, blackout and bombs.  
  • Acts as a point of contact for visitors, contractors and maintenance technicians.  
  • Coordinates with staff and outside groups in the preparation of building use for sporting events and the auditorium for performances.  
  • Maintains a custodial operating budget; keeps track of and orders necessary custodial supplies.  Provides guidance for MSDS sheets and OSHA standards for proper use of green chemicals used to clean the facilities.  
  • Trains custodial staff on following precautions and standard procedures for handling bodily fluids.  Performs routine training for staff on use of equipment and procedures.  
  • Conducts a safety meeting with staff and participates in required on-line safety courses as a group.  
  • Performs regular maintenance on custodial equipment (oil changes, cleaning, updating records, and etc.).  
  • Monitor generator exercises.  
  • Conducts general maintenance on minor building issues (carpentry, locksmith, and light duty painting).  
  • Submits computer generated work orders to correct issues within the building and grounds that require assistance from Facilities and Operations Staff.  
  • Performs other related tasks as required.

  • General knowledge of cleaning methods, materials, and equipment.  
  • General knowledge of school heating system operation and maintenance.  
  • Thorough knowledge of cleaning materials, supplies and equipment.  Thorough knowledge about building fixtures and equipment.  
  • Ability to supervise and work effectively with other people.  
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written directions.  
  • Ability to work with total school staff.  
  • Ability to express ideas clearly, orally and in writing.  
  • Ability to plan, train and supervise the work of subordinates in a manner conducive to full performance and high morale.  
  • Ability to operate standard office equipment and related hardware and software.  
  • Ability to conduct safety inspections and drills.  
  • Ability to process work orders.  
  • Ability to understand MSDS's and other chemical documentation.  
  • Ability to learn specialized tools, equipment or software related to business needs.  
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, contractors and the general public.

Minimum Training and Experience

  • High school diploma or GED and minimal experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience.  
  • Computer experience required.  
  • Must have a NC driver's license.  
  • Must be able to read and write

Minimum Qualifications or Standards Required to Perform Essential Job Functions

  • Must be physically able to lift 50 pounds.  
  • Requires climbing, stooping, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping and repetitive motion.  
  • This work requires the regular exertion of up to 10 pounds of force, frequent exertion of up to 25 pounds of force and occasional exertion of up to 50 pounds of force.  
  • Vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word.
  • No special hearing perception is required.  
  • Work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, using of measuring devices, assembly or fabrication of parts within arm’s length, operating machines, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities.  
  • Work frequently requires exposure to fumes or airborne particles, exposure to vibration and exposure to bloodborne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment and occasionally requires wet, humid conditions (non-weather), working near moving mechanical  parts, working in high, precarious places, exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals, exposure to outdoor weather conditions and exposure to the risk of electrical shock.  
  • Work is generally in a moderately noisy location (e.g. business office, light traffic).
